There’s been quite a buzz lately about a fascinating article in The Guardian discussing how some couples navigate infidelity without calling it quits on their relationship. If you haven’t read it yet, here’s the link.
It raises an intriguing question: what exactly constitutes infidelity in your eyes?
With over 13 years of experience as a relationship coach, I’ve come to understand that infidelity is a deeply personal concept. For one person, a simple kiss might shatter trust, while for another, it might not even register as a breach of fidelity. Emotional affairs can be just as devastating—if not more so—than purely physical ones for some individuals.
My advice?
Have an open and honest conversation with your partner about what infidelity means to each of you. Misaligned expectations in this area can lead to immense hurt and hinder the healing process. I’ve seen it time and time again: couples struggling to mend because they couldn’t agree on what constitutes betrayal.
Infidelities often signal deeper issues within the relationship. That’s why I advocate for proactive relationship maintenance. By nurturing your relationship during its good times, you become better equipped to recognise the warning signs and address underlying issues before they manifest as infidelity.
Surviving infidelity hinges on various factors, including the strength of your bond and your willingness to seek help, embrace change, and take accountability for your actions. It’s not an easy journey, but it’s possible with commitment and effort.
For those navigating the aftermath of infidelity, I often recommend “How Can I Ever Trust You Again” by Andrew Marshall. This insightful book not only guides you through rebuilding trust but also offers valuable perspectives from both the betrayed and the betrayer.
